I know that some species of fish after breeding once can store sperm for several spawn cycles, but haven't heard of this happening with any cichlids. Honestly I suggest calling into Pet Fish Talk (linked on the right side bar) this Wednesday or sending them an email. They're experts with far more experience than I (and most) have with just about every freshwater fish imaginable. So they may be quite interested in this and provide you with some answers.

Do you know what species it is? There are over 3000+ species of Cichlids, with many different means of reproduction. So if you can identify the species it will help tremendously.

PLEASE read the whole thing. i know it is lengthy, but i am desperate!!!!! history: i bought 2 cichlids about 8 years ago. 7 yrs ago cichlid 1 killed cichlid 2. chichlid 1 was left ALONE in the tank for OVER A YEAR (something most people cannot grasp). SO the freaky part is that in April of 2005 this lone cichlid started having babies. Freaked out as i was, i started consulting web forums, university professors, pet store specialists… etc but no one could tell me why she (SHE???) was having babies. time passed… i’d get rid of a “litter” and she’d have another. this fish must have had over 100 babies. by her self. every body thought i was crazy. i’d give away the babies.. until one day i just said… f-it. maybe she needs to keep the babies so she will stop popping them out. that was 2007. i left the babies with her (3 survived) and she no longer reproduced. in june of 2008 she passed away, and me like a dumb ass with kids bawling in the background flushed her down the toilet….. then hours later realized I SHOULD HAVE SENT HER TO UNCW!!!!! so…. end of story right….. that is what is thought. the remaining fish within hours became agressive and long story short… within a couple weeks i had one lone chichlid… AGAIN. i was for real just getting ready to shut the tank down and give him to a willing pet shop when my kid yells down the stairs “MOM THE FISH HAD BABIES AGAIN!!!” So- here i am again, i am done with this whole process but has anyone had this happen before????? or is it the mary magdolene of fish????????????????????????????

Great site! The information on Discus was very helpful. It's not that I am unfamiliar with Cichlids breeding but recently my young adults started pairing off and I currently have 2 pairs that have laid eggs. Since it's been a while with Breeding Discus. I have umpteen amounts of angel fish pairs and my chosen bottom feeder are the salt and pepper cory catfish, which are also very very prolific with an ever-going breeding group.

What I found about all my Amazonian fish is that they really have personalities and if you watch them continuously you will observe their individual personalities. I am finding that a high protein diet of frozen brine and hikari worms 3 times a week as a snack, as well as freeze dried Mysis shrimp (they absolutely so berserk over it) and a really good granule food fed in small amounts frequently, along with a bucket of fresh water daily changes has not only helped them grow really quickly but my angelfish are maturing at a faster rate and producing hatched clutches at 6-8 months. The only other supplements I use for the fish is a vitamin which really helps in bringing out the deep blues in the discus and makes them ferociously hungry and ready to spawn.

I use a black water extract on occasion with the angels when they skip a couple of spawnings and their bellies are full. Medicine wise I use prazipro which doesn't interfere with the filtration and seems to work best on the Discus. If anyone has any info you think I could use please let me know I look forward to it....Peace and Thank you

This post was very helpful to me. I have a Golden Mbuna who looked like a female when I bought it but now has changed to look like a male with the egg spots on its fin, but has a mouth full of eggs?? It is also in a tank with 5 other males so it could be some sort of defense thing. Thank You

Its been years since I’ve had fish and I became interested in breeding them again when I went to the Georgia aquarium last week. I’ve been cycling my old 30 gallon tank with some danios I picked up. I also bought some albino angelfish off that site you linked to, I like their eyes. They should be here tomorrow and hopefully in a month or two I’ll be able to start breeding them. I’ll tell you how it goes, thanks for the information.
